Whilst our founding themes are Gothic, Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, this list is neither exclusive nor exhaustive. We welcome contributions from a huge spectrum of genre work. For more details please view our list of example Genres Embraced by ‘42’.
We are always on the lookout for new contributors and are currently gathering names of performers ready for when we launch ‘42 Birmingham’. So if you are a writer, poet, musician, performance artist, actor or comedian and you have an interest in these genres, please get in touch. You can contact the 42 Birmingham Team either by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or via their Facebook Page.
If you would like your work to be performed at ‘42’ but do not feel confident yet to do so yourself, don’t worry. We can arrange for a local writer to read it out on your behalf. We can also offer this assistance for contributors who are unable to attend the event itself. Let your voice be heard!
We are also looking for additional members to join our team, so if you would like to become involved in bringing ‘42’ to the second City, please contact us.
So if you live in Birmingham, are studying in the area, or are visiting and fancy a night out with a difference, join us for an evening of dark and fantastical entertainment showcasing local talent.
Following the great success of the ‘42 Open Mic Night’ in Worcester, there has been a lot of enthusiastic support for similar events in other cities and work is underway to establish these evenings.
A notable city destined to see a ‘42’ is Birmingham, and it has a link with the event already...
Birmingham is a dynamic city with an enviable arts scene, and can lay claim to having inspired some superb genre writers. Particularly J. R. R. Tolkien, whose inspirations for ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ are dotted all over the city. These range from humble Mosley Bog, a pretty an unassuming little nature reserve, and Shire Hole Mill on the River Cole, to the water towers of Edgbaston Reservoir and the Clock Tower of Birmingham University, which inspired the wizard’s towers of Middle Earth. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was once a young GP in Birmingham, suspiciously close to the poignantly named ‘Sherlock Street’. John Wyndam, author of ‘Day of the Triffids’ hailed from Birmingham, and the director of Frankenstein, James Whale, started his career at Birmingham Rep. There must be something in the soil of Brum, the place inspires so many Gods and Monsters.
Glenn James, Co-Founder of ‘42’, was born and raised in Birmingham. He studied art at Bourneville Art College, and had a lively involvement in the sci-fi scene (writing for and illustrating fanzines) and acting with the Theatre groups of the city. Co-Founder, Angela James was working as a graduate in Birmingham when she and Glenn met one another at a screening of Lon Chaney’s ‘Phantom of The Opera’.
They now have 2 daughters and have been married since 2005. As such Birmingham is close to Glenn and Angela’s hearts. They aim to start the Birmingham ‘42’ open mic evenings to provide genre performer and writers with an opportunity to find their voice, and their audience, in the renowned Heart of the Midlands.
